Racketmen Begin Season |
|||||||||
| After a full month of practice, the varsity tennis team finally started their '68 season last night when they faced State power Niles East. This may have been their toughest meet of the season. The Warriors should have few problems this year as long as they fulfill their potential. Coach Roger King's netmen are hoping to at least match the performance of last year's team. Maine took a second in the Mid-Suburban League, behind Arlington, and a second in the District meet. The season record was 13-2. The varsity squad this year is headed by returning lettermen Dave Williams and Bill Caddy, both seniors, with Williams specializing in first singles and Caddy in first doubles. Bruce Baker '68 will be backing them up. Also serving the team will be juniors Drake Mertes, Bill Ritchie, and Tom Tyler. Sophomores Dave Keehn and Jack Williams will be backing them up. |
Although playing in the Central Suburban League this year, the Warriors will still be Conference contenders and the team everybody would love to beat. Getting set to provide a close contest will be Maine South. This meet may be the most interesting, but Maine West will hopefully find the other teams right down their alley. The frosh-soph squad this year has seven sophomores, six of them returning. They are supplemented by nine freshmen. Under Coach Rideout, their season also looks promising. An extra feature of the War-rior courts this year is the presence of windbreaks, which the team just put up. Such problems as having a five m.p.h. serve into the wind followed by a 50-m.p.h. smash return should be remedied by the new additions. |
