Warrior Trackmen Continue To Win; Edge Wheeling 58-51 |
|||||||||
| Tomorrow marks the beginning of the outdoor track season. The Warriors open up their season in an away meet at Palatine. The first home meet will take place, next Thursday when Maine West plays host to Willowbrook. Coach Joe Jobst has optimistic hopes for the outdoor cindermen this year. New Trier West and Maine South will probably be the toughest rivals in the new Conference, according to Coach Jobst. However, he also asserted that "They still have to beat us first." The indoor team recently completed their super-season which included, among other things, an 8-1 dual meet record and the Conference championship. They concluded their season March 23 in the Blue Demon Relays at Maine East. In this meet the Warriors were edged by host Maine East by the score of 501/2-47. West nipped Arlington by one point. The remainder of the 12 schools the Warriors conquered ranged from fourth place Niles West (42 points) to last-place Maine South (one point). Included among the Warrior successes was senior Jim Mueting's first place in the pole vault competition with a leap of 13'6". Number one slots were also taken by two relay teams: sophomore eight-lap relay (Henkes, Klose, Krainik, Parrotte), new record of 2:44.8; and frosh four-lap relay (Duff, Binder, Willison, Berg), new record of 1:19. |
Maine's cindermen became Conference champions the previous Saturday at Maine East. Of the eight teams, three were in close contention for first. Of these Maine West emerged the victors with 50 points, followed by New Trier West with 43 and Niles West with 41. Four of the first-place winners were from Maine West. Terry Hammer '68 tied the meet record with 6.5 seconds in the high hurdles. He was also first with 6.4 in the low hurdles. Mueting tied the meet record in the pole vault when he cleared the bar at 13'. Top spots were also gained by Lee LaBadie '68 in the half-mile, who broke the old record by over five seconds when he ran the distance in 1:54.6; and Gary Smith '68, who set a new meet mile record of 4:31.4. The trackmen didn't fare as well the preceding day in the Evanston Relays. Evanston took the meet with 80 points. Maine West finished fourth with 33, only six points less than second-place New Trier East. Twelve schools were in the meet. LaBadie set a new field house record there with his 4:13.9 mile run. The soph relay team won the mile relay with 3:41.1. Maine beat Wheeling 58-51 March 12. West's eight first-place finishes included: Hammer, high hurdles, 7.8, and low hurdles, 7.4; Gary Wolf '69, 880; LaBadie, mile, 4:28.7; Pete Klages '68, two mile, 10:20.7 and mile relay; Larry Kahler '68, long jump, 19'71/2"; and Dan Butow '68, shot put, 43'. At Evanston's North Shore Frosh Invitational, Maine West finished fourth in a field of 12. Evanston placed first. |
