Arlington Edges West Golf Team- 178-169 |
|||||||||
| On April 9 the Maine Went golf team opened up their season on the wrong foot by losing to Arlington. The final score was 169-178. The match at the Golden Acres Country Club was non-Conference however, and it probably could best be described as a warmup for the Warriors. The low score in the meet, a 40, was also achieved by Arlington. Ken Helfers '68 shot a 42 to lead the stickmen from West. Bob Edwards '70 took the second spot in shooting for the Warriors with a 43. The other golfers from Maine included Dave Krowka '68, Dave Grutzius '68, and Ed Duchaj although their scores were slightly higher. |
Varsity Coach Eugene Zuccarini was disappointed over the loss but still expressed optimism about the upcoming season. Coach Zuccarini figures the stickmen will rebound from their opening loss. The frosh-soph golfers fared no better either. They took it on the chin also, as they dropped a 172-193 decision to the same Arlington team. The best score for Maine was a 44 which was chalked up by Grant Pick '70. The other members of the team were Randy Getsla '71, Gary Navratil '71, Jim Krumpos '70, and Bob Shirk '71. There were 46 boys out for the frosh-soph squad this year, but this number has been cut to 22. Frosh-soph Coach Richard Fulk stated that a "promising group of golfers are out for the team." Coach Fulk feels that the junior Warriors will have to wait until Conference play in order to evaluate the competition. |
