Warrior Racketmen Win First Dual Meet |

| The Maine West varsity racketmen scored their first dual meet victory of the season last week when they downed Prospect 3-2. First singles player, Dave Williams, beat Dave Johnson 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Bruce Baker was beaten by Chuck Houghson 6-2, 6-2; and Dave Keehn lost the third singles to Knight Scott Russell 6-3, 2-6, 2-6. However, Maine swept the doubles competition. Dave Willams and Bill Caddy defeated Bill Wichman and Bob Bruhl 6-3, 8-6, 6-2, while Tom Tyler and Drake Mertes won second doubles by beating Craig Weber and Terry Schaffer 11-9, 6-1. In a quadrangular hosted by Maine, Coach Roger King's Warriors finished in a second place tie with Waukegan, who also scored 14 points along with Maine West. First was Home-wood-Flossmoor with 21 points, and last was Lake Park with six. The first singles championship went to Williams when he defeated a Waukegan player 6-3, 6-3. Second places went to four Warrior singles players and one player and two doubles teams player and two doubles teams took third. |
On the previous night, April 5, Maine lost to Niles East 4-1. The only Warrior victory against Niles was taken by Tyler and Mertes in second doubles. Last Saturday the frosh-soph squad participated with seven other teams in the Arlington tournament. The teams finished in the following order: Hinsdale Central, New Trier East, Evanston, Maine West, Maine South, New Trier West, Homewood-Flossmoor, and Arlington. The doubles teams were the most successful for Maine. Tim Wayman and Jack Williams were very successful, winning four out of five matches and finishing third. In second doubles Rick Cordts and Ron Finstad took a second place. However, they won the Maine West quadrangular at Rand Park. Although the freshmen fell to Niles East 3-2, the sophomores beat Niles East by the same score. |
