Warrior Trackmen Triumph Over Palatine, LaGrange

Maine West's varsity trackmen got off on the right foot April 6 when they defeated LaGrange and host Palatine in a triangular. Maine West, with 72 points, easily beat Palatine and LaGrange with 59 and 58 points respectively.

Coach Joseph Jobst's Warriors got off to a good start when Warrior Pete Klages won the two-mile event with a time of 10:11. Terry Hammer continued the Maine drive when he placed first in the high hurdles in 16 seconds and first in the low hurdles in 21.6.

Larry Kahler's fourth place time of 10.8 was almost right behind the winning time of 10.4 that went to Costello of LaGrange. Palatine's Donahue won the half mile in 1:59.5 not far ahead of third place finisher Bob Glitz.

The Warriors managed to take the 880 relay in 1:37.7. Kahler won the broad jump with 18'9". A height of 11' was reached by both Behrens and Zajonc of Palatine in the pole vault. Although Palatine's Giancaspro won the 440 with 52.8, Warrior Drake placed second with 53.1. Lee LaBadie was all alone in
the mile, his 4:24 time being over 15 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor Gary Wolf who finished fourth with 4:45.3. Third place finishes were taken by Larry Nelson in the high jump, with 5'6"; Dave Hooper in the 220, 23.6; and Monty Abbott in the discus.

Maine placed second in the mile relay but failed to place at all in the shot put.

The sophomores lost a heartbreaker to Willowbrook on April 11 when they fell by a score of 64-63. Warrior first places were captured by Delmar Hansen in high and low hurdles, Dave Boesche in the shot put, Luke Burchard in the pole vault, and Bob Lidinsky in the mile. Maine also won the 880 relay.

However, the frosh beat Willowbrook 77-50. Maine winners were Fred Horn, discus and shot put; Mike Pruitt, pole vault; Paul Binder, 100- and 220-yard dashes; Mark Watkins, 880; Dennis Willison, 440; and Jeff Duff, long jump. Maine also took the mile relay.
