Sue Lloyd To Represent Maine as AFS Student |
|||||||||
| Sue Lloyd '68 may become Maine West's second foreign exchange student. Recently, in a letter from the AFS headquarters in New York, Sue was informed that she had been retained as a finalist in the program. This selection does not mean that Sue will definitely go; her final acceptance depends on the selection of a matching host family. Sue will be notified whether or not she will go about the middle of June. She has no preference as to what country she would like to visit. Only about 75 per cent of the 15 finalists chosen at New York are placed because there are more candidates than homes available. Sue feels that her experiences as a former competitive figure skater may have helped her to be chosen. "I met a lot of wonderful people and lived away from home." |
Sue thinks that a lot of people have the wrong idea that to be a foreign exchange student one must have straight "A's," and be a "super-person. It's not so." According to Sue, it takes a person who loves people, is friendly, has personality, and has "B" average grades. One does not have to go to the country whose language he learned in school. Sue explained that the students learn the language of the country, where they will be staying, in a language camp. "When it's a matter of necessity, you learn faster," commented Sue. Sue contends that a foreign exchange student is, in effect, a youth ambassador. He gives the people of another country a true impression of what an American really is. He shows the true spirit and brotherhood and good will toward men. Presently, Sue is studying analytical geometry, physics, English IV E, Spanish IV Accelerated, government, and is a Senior Leader. This vivacious senior with stars in her eyes, who also wishes on them, asks, "If you ever want to wish on a star and don't know what to wish for, wish for me." |
