| Distributive Education members held their Eighth Annual Employer-Employee banquet on Tuesday, April 30. Mr. Elwood Hughes, coordinator of Distributive Education Club, commented that the banquet was a smorgas-bord held at Heuer's. Among the guests present were Miss Marcia J. Storey, Business Education teacher; Mr. Raymond J. Ross, Business Education Department chairman; and Mr. Herman L. Rider, principal. The Optimists, a Des Plaines civic organization, are donating two flags to Maine West. Both Illinois state flags will be presented to Mr. Rider in the near future. "This will be a yearly trip for all future geology classes," stated Mr. Joseph Jobst. He was speaking about the first geology field trip to Braidwood, Illinois, on Thursday, April 25. Students explored the Peabody Coal Mine in search of fossils of plants and animals over 250,000 years old. April 26 was the date of the science field trip to the Desoto Corporation. Desoto is a research company in the coating industry; students were permitted to tour the general laboratories and a few test labs. Mr. Karl Miller, science instructor, remarked, "It was an introduction to the job of a chemist in the coatings industry." |
Art Awards will be presented to students on Wednesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. The program will take place in the cafeteria with approximately 150 students in attendance. Mr. George Blanas, Art Department chairman, announced, "In selecting a student leadership, creativeness, service to the department, and scholarship are considered." Two Business Education field trips took place on April 23 and April 24. Business Math classes embarked to visit the Midwest Stock Exchange and the Board of Trade. Then Wednesday, April 24, marked a field trip for Mrs. Sortal's business English class; their tour included the Midwest Stock Exchange; Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith's brokerage firm; the Continental Bank; and Teletype. Recent guests of Miss Eleanor Baldwin's government class were Eleanor Rohrbach, city clerk; Robert Hinde, fourth ward alderman; and Herbert Behrel, mayor of Des Plaines. The purpose of topics discussed was to familiarize students with our local government. Freshman and Sophomore yearbook pictures and Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior ID. pictures were taken on May 1 and May 2 in S-201. The Brass Rail was the setting of the Food Occupations banquet on Monday, April 29. Miss Pat Olson, coordinator of food occupations, commented, "The students of this program are involved in various food preparations or serving." |
