Diamondmen Win in Opener

The Maine West varsity baseball team has been having their ups and downs lately. Although the Warrior diamondmen won their first conference game in the Central Suburban League, they dropped three out of their next four games.

On April 15 West opened their conference play by trouncing New Trier West 8-4. The Maine sluggers pounded out 10 hits while the highlight of the attack was a home run by Warrior Jim Kulik. Pitcher Harry Tistle easily coasted the Warriors to their victory.

The next opponent was Deerfield, who managed to slip past West on April 22 by a score of 2-1. This away game was the exact opposite of the wide open slug fest with New Trier. The defenses were tight, and running played the biggest factor in a pitcher's duel of this type. West's Jim Kulik came out of the game with a sprained shoulder.

One of the toughest foes, if not the toughest, in the new conference handed the diamondmen a 7-1 loss. The foe was obviously Maine South, and the
only bright spot in this game came when Warrior Bob Banger socked a South pitch over the fence. Maine's progress was hampered by the cold, rainy weather and poor playing conditions.

The Warrior's next success came last Thursday. Glenbrook South was the victim of a nine hit attack that produced a 6-5 victory. Leading the way were Warriors Gary Curtin and Ted Waskowski who each had three hits to their credit.

Then last Friday Maine was involved in another low scoring battle, although the men from West came out on the short end of a 3-1 score. The diamondmen's only run came on a Gary Moranz double that scored Dave Zulawski from second base.

The sophomore baseball squad has not had the best of luck either. Many of their games have been rescheduled or not completed. On April 17 the junior Warriors played 4V2 innings with Maine South and were losing 16-3. The sophomores succumbed to the Deerfield team by a 12-5 margin on April 22.
