Golfer's Improve Further |
|||||||||
| The last few meets have been a series of close decisions for our varsity golfers. The Tuesday, April 23, loss to New Trier West was witness to that. The team captain, Dave Krowka '68, posted a 45 for nine holes, while Ken Helfers '68 was low man with 44. Bob Edwards '68 turned in a 46, and Dave Grutzius '68 rounded out the foursome with a way off par 51. The high scores by both teams (New Trier West is expected to win conference this year) reflect the fact that the match was played in a driving rain. It was played at the Warriors' home course, Golden Acres Country Club in Roselle. Thursday, April 25, they again narrowly missed victory against Downers Grove North, but this time they hacked almost 20 strokes off their Tuesday score. The biggest improvement on the team was Dave Grutzius, who shot a 39, 12 strokes lower than his Tuesday score. There were improvements in the rest of the team also with Krowka and Helfers shooting 41's and Jim Reed '68 posting a 42. |
When this reporter asked Grutzius about the team's chances for conference victory, he replied, "Since we are strong finishers, (we proved this by taking the first place in conference meet last year), we have a good chance to finish high in conference. By the way," he added, "Maine West is in a very good conference." This week's meets included some tough matches with some tough schools. Monday, April 29, the team played Glenbrook South at their home club. Tuesday, April 30, it was conference contender Deerfield, whom the team played at Golden Acres. For the third match in three days, they competed in a Triangular, a meet with three schools competing: Maine West, Prospect, and Elgin. Tomorrow the team plays at the Wheeling Invitational at the Chevy Chase Country Club. Monday the West-South rivalry will be resparked when the team faces Maine South. |
