Family Living Classes Hold Play School

As part of their family living unit, the psychology classes are conducting a play school for preschool children. The purpose of the program is to give the students an opportunity to work with the preschool age child and to apply concepts which they have learned in class.

The youngsters have been divided into three groups. Group A attends the school during the 1, 2, and 3 periods; group B, during the 4, 5, and 6 periods; and group C, during the 7, 8, and 9 periods. Group B eats lunch at school while the two other groups are served lighter refreshments.

To aid in this program and to facilitate work on their unit on foods for children, the first period Home Economics I class of Mrs. Elizabeth Bryant prepares the lunches and snacks.

To prepare for this program, the psychology classes visited two children's schools: the Clearbrook School and the Mt. Prospect Day School. The purpose was to observe the youngsters' activities and development.
Also on May 5, Mrs. Eldon Burk spoke to the classes on "Creative Activities for the Preschool Child."

The play school activity climaxes a busy year for the psychology students. The classes were visited by many guest speakers. These included Mr. Dan Murray, staff supervisor, Delinquent Boys' Division of Cook County. Mr. Murray discussed the legal aspects of delinquency, types of institutions for delinquents, and the rights of delinquents, and procedures used in case of arrest.

Other speakers were the Rev. Mr. Ernest G. Grant of the First Congregational Church who spoke on "Religion in Marriage" and Pastor Donald Hallburg of the Trinity Lutheran Church who spoke on resolution of conflicts in marriage, interfaith marriage, wedding services and the preparations for them, places to go for counseling, and parents and in-laws.

Also, on April 19, a representative from the Oehler Funeral Home came to discuss "Death: Crisis in the Family."
