| The Varsity Cheerleaders for the 1968-69 school year were selected Monday, May 6. Clinics were held May 1, 2, and 3 to help the girls to develop their skills. The new squad consists of Corliss Blezer '69, Chris Clausen '70, Pat Cordts '69, Eileen Goelz '69, Dorrie Johnson '70, and Katie Mandell '69. The two alternates, Janice Bobernac '69 and Cathy Leer '70, will cheer during the absence of any one of the squad members. The new Junior Varsity squad was chosen Thursday, May . These girls also attended clinics. The new mem-bers are Roxy Doremus '71, Bev Drews '71, Betsy Huxmann '70, Cheryl Jaeschke '71, Donna Mertes '71, and Diane Sachetti '71. |
Each of the girls were judged on their stunts, the different types of jumps, voice, appearance, pep, and coordination. The judges were the senior cheerleaders, teachers, and boys from the various sports. "A total of 13 girls tried out for varsity and 18 for junior varsity," remarked Joan Beyer '68, captain of this year's varsity cheerleaders. "The real thrill for the girls is that they will attend a cheerleading camp at Lake Geneva this summer." At the camp the two squads will learn many new cheers and cheerleading techniques along with other high school squads. Maine West also has a Frosh-Soph Squad which consists of three freshmen and three sophomores. These are selected in the fall of each year. This enables the in-coming freshmen to try out. |
