Diamondmen Climb into First Division

The Maine West varsity baseball team won their fifth consecutive game last Friday as they edged past Niles North 8-7. The Warriors have rebounded from their early season slump to bring their conference record up to a 7 and 5 mark. The resurgence of the diamondmen has vaulted them into third place in their conference behind Niles West and Glenbrook North.

The winning streak came after two straight losses. On April 29 West lost a tight pitching battle with Glenbrook North by the score of 2-1. On April 30 Niles North handed them a 6-4 loss. Then on May 1 Maine started their comeback by walloping New Trier West 8-2. Ten hits were chalked up by the Warriors.

On May 3 at Maine South the diamondmen downed the opposition 7-2 with the help of a five-run inning and the strong pitching of Harry Tistle. Glenbrook South succumbed to the shutout pitching of Warrior Bill Robertson 2-0 on May 6 here at Maine.
Deerfield was the victim of a 16-8 slugfest on May 8. The Maineites put on a real offensive as each man in the starting lineup got at least one hit and Ted Waskowski scored three runs to help the cause. With the aid of three hits by Bob Banger and a clutch relief performance by Ed Gibis, the Warriors managed to gain their fifth straight against Niles North.

The sophomore baseball team has kept up a winning trend also. Their schedule recently included 19-4, 6-4, 6-3, and 13-8 triumphs over Glenbrook South, Maine South, Glenbrook South again, Deerfield, and Niles North. As of last week the sophomores had put together an impressive 11-2 record for the season.

The Maine West freshman squad has also had a fine season. The mini-Warriors recent schedule included 6-0, 6-0, and 3-2 victories against Glenbrook North, Maine South, and Glenbrook South. A highlight of the freshman campaign was the no hitter thrown by Jim Hanselmann. As of last week the freshmen had posted a 10-2-2 mark for the season.
