Netmen Walk Rocky Road

Maine West's varsity racketmen were hoping to pull out of a four-meet slump last Tuesday when they battled Niles West on the home courts. Most of the Warrior defeats have narrowly missed becoming victories, however, because of their 3-2 scores.

The racketmen's worst defeat of the season was dealt to them by Niles North on May 9. Maine was shut out 5-0 in the away meet.

The Warriors were edged by Deerfield 3-2 on Tuesday of the same week. Victories were gained by first singles player, Dave Williams, when he beat Blair Neller 7-5, 7-5, and by Bill Caddy in third singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bill Kahnweiler.

Maine was beaten by Waukegan by the score of 3-2, also. The Warrior wins were gained again by Caddy in third singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 decision over Christensen of Deerfield and also by first doubles team Dave Keehn-Jack Williams in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Hochberger-McIntyre.
Although the 15-team Evanston district meet was partially rained out May 4, Dave Willams made it to the semi-finals before he was finally beaten.

On the preceding Tuesday Maine was again downed 3-2, this time by Glenbrook South. Here the Warriors swept the doubles competition when Williams-Keehn beat Baily-Thornberry 7-5, 6-1 and Tom Tyler-Drake Mertes reigned victorious in second doubles when they smashed Nelson-Butler 6-1, 6-1.

The underclassmen also lost 5-0 to Niles North at Niles West. This followed a similar defeat at the hands of Deerfield. Maine downed Waukegan 3-2, however, with victories by Ron Finstad and Mark Dodge in second and third singles respectively and by Bruce Barringer - Rick Cordts in first doubles. However, the Warriors lost to Glenbrook South 3-2 earlier.
