West Trackmen Continue To Win

A seventh place in their 32-team district was captured by the Warrior cindermen last Saturday at Forest View. At the meet three Maine West boys qualified to participate in the state finals tomorrow at Champaign.

Lee LaBadie was the solitary Warrior to place first in an event. His 4:19.1 mile time confirmed that he has a good chance of taking the crown, especially after his top rival, Proviso West's Rich Elliott, will be trying for a first place in the two mile.

The two other qualifiers are Terry Hammer, who took a third in the high hurdles at district, and Jim Mueting, who did the same in the pole vault.

The Warriors traveled to Niles West Tuesday, May 7, to win a triangular which also included Glenbrook South. Behind Maine's 95 1/2 points were Niles West's 82 1/2 and Glenbrook's 47.

Warrior first places were gained by Pete Klages, two-mile, 10:19.1; Terry Hammer, high hurdles, 15.0, and low hurdles, 20.6; Bob Glitz, 880, 2:06.5; Lee LaBadie, mile, 4:23.6; Gene Behrens, pole vault, 11'O"; and a Maine first place in the mile relay with ':33.2.

Maine West took fourth place in the Maine East relays May 3, behind New Trier East, Maine East, and Evanston (first), but ahead of Lyons, Maine South, and Highland Park (seventh).
The only Warrior first place was taken in the distance medley relay. The 440, 880, 3/4 mile, and mile distances were run respectively by Gerry Krainik, Bob Glitz, Mike Wolf, and Lee LaBadie for a total time of 10:33.8, a new meet record.

The trackmen took second in the 480-yard low hurdle shuttle relay with a 57.8 time, while Warrior Ken Zyrkowski took a second with a 5'8" high jump.

On Tuesday, April 30, the cindermen visited Glenbrook North in a triangular which included New Trier West. Maine was first with 89 points; Glenbrook was second with 71; and New Trier took third with 63.

Warrior firsts included Klages, two-mile, 10:04.1; Hammer, high hurdles, 15.0, and low hurdles, 20.9; Krainik, 440, 51.4; and LaBadie, mile, 4:18.4. Maine also took the mile relay in 3:30.

The frosh-soph have also been faring well. On Monday, the freshmen placed first in a frosh only meet at Proviso West which included 11 schools. They also won a triangular May 3 which included Glenbrook South and Niles West. The frosh-soph took second in a MW - Glenbrook North-New Trier West triangular April 30.
