Viv Geiger Wins $500 Scholarship

The Des Plaines Soroptimist Club recently announced the winner of their annual $500 teaching scholarship. The recipient is Vivienne Geiger '68.

The scholarship was open to any senior girl who plans to enter the teaching profession. The only other qualifications were that she be in the upper half of her class scholastically and that she have a Des Plaines mailing address.

Mrs. Herman Herzog, chairman of the scholarship selection committee, commented, "This is an excellent opportunity because the application requirements are so few."

Upon receiving the applications, which were due March 31, the selection committee evaluated them on an individual basis according to a point system.

According to Mrs. Herzog, "We look not only for a girl whose scholastic standing is high but also whose activities have been well-rounded. In Viv Geiger we have found such a girl!"
Foremost among Viv's activities are her positions as editor of the Maine West Legend and as student director of the school musical, Bye Bye Birdie. She also participated in V-Show, Arsenic and Old Lace, and has been active as a Senior Leader. After college she plans to teach speech.

The scholarship selection committee consisted of four members, including Mrs. Herzog. The other three are Helen Burt, Mrs. Dorothy Mackland, and Ruth Wendt.

Each committee member rated the applicants independently of the other three. When the points were totaled, Viv had rated highest.

The Soroptimists are a group of professional women executives. Their proclaimed purpose is for "the betterment of women." Membership in the club is by invitation only, and there is only one member for each field of business.

The Des Plaines chapter is five years old and contains less than 30 women of the community.
