Trackmen Finish Second in Conference

Coach Joe Jobst's Warrior trackmen ended their '67-'68 season May 25 when they finished second behind Deerfield in the eight-team Central Suburban League Conference meet at Niles West. The meet was held one week after Warrior Lee LaBadie captured second place in the mile in the annual I.H.S.A. track meet at Champaign.

Deerfield, with 64 points, wasn't seriously threatened in the conference meet by Maine West's 40 points. However, LaBadie set a new meet record with his 4:25.3 mile time, while Jim Mueting tied the record with a 13'6" pole vault. Terry Hammer also took first with his 14.7 high hurdles time.
The cindermen edged Deerfield 94-93, however, in a home triangular which included Niles North and their 34 points. Maine captured first in eight events. These were Pete Klages, two mile, 10:02.5; Terry Hammer, low hurdles, 21.5, and high hurdles 14.8; Larry Nelson, long jump, 20'lO"; Bob Glitz, half-mile, 2:03.2; Maine West, 880-yard relay, 1:33.6; Lee LaBadie, mile, 4:25.6; and Jim Mueting, pole vault, 13'6".

Although Hammer and Mueting also went downstate, LaBadie was the only Warrior to make it to the finals. It was here in the mile that Lee captured second for the second consecutive year, in the race he has been running since his sophomore year. Although Lee was in front most of the race, a last- minute sprint by Tom Swan of Princeton edged him out in the final stretch.
