Eight MW Students Become National Merit Semi-Finalists

Eight Maine West seniors have been named semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 1967-68.

These outstanding students are Melissa L. Amling, Geraldine A. Bokor, Steven P. Cornelius, Ann L. Jackson, Jeri G. Jacobs, Peter R. Saxe, Philip W. Schug, and Frank K. Schulz.

The purposes of the National Merit Program are to identify students of unusual intellectual attainment and promise; to honor these students publicly; to help as many of them as possible attend the college of their choice; and to provide a means whereby corporations, colleges, and others can offer them financial assistance.

Mr. George Blanas, chairman of the Art Department and chairman of the Scholarship Committee for 1967-68, made this comment concerning the semi-finalists: "The faculty, students and community are proud of the
achievement shown by the eight semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

"The Scholarship Committee 1967-68 encourages juniors to take the National Merit Exam for 1968-69 and will suggest ways possible for continuance of high scholarship in all areas of study."

Others on the Scholarship Committee 1967-68 are Mr. Loren Miller, chairman of the Science Department; Mr. Glenn Hoffman, chairman of the Social Science Department, and Mr. Robert Cochrane, chairman of the Industrial Education Department.

The students were selected on the basis of their scores on the 1967 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT); and they, along with the other semifinalists, represent about one half of one percent of the nation's graduating secondary school seniors. The students now have a chance to become finalists and to win one of the many National Merit Scholarships.
