Gridmen Defeat New Trier |
|||||||||
| Maine East was the scene of the Maine West-Maine South football game Friday night. The first quarter saw Maine South take an early lead when from their own 6-yard line, halfback Tom Spotts ran 94 yards for a Hawk touchdown. The only Warrior touchdown came in the third quarter with fullback Ken Werner running into the end-zone for 6 points. After two attempts the extra point could not be made, and the score remained 6-6. With two and a half minutes remaining in the game, Hawks reserve quarterback, Hugh Rodham, completed a 30-yard pass for the winning touchdown and a final score of 6-13. The first quarter was rather discouraging for the Warriors when several of quarterback Bob Banger's passes refused to connect with their intended receivers. Disaster struck with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Warriors took up the defense on the 6-yard line of Maine South. The ball was snapped, and halfback Tom Spotts ran the ball for the first score of the game. The Hawks were unable to make the extra point, and the first quarter ended with the score at 6-0. The Warriors showed determination in the second quarter when quarterback Bob Banger intercepted a Hawk pass deep inside their own territory. Fullback Ken Werner made the first down for Maine West. Bob Banger threw several passes, all incomplete. |
With two and a half minutes remaining in the second quarter, a 15-yard penalty was called against Maine South; but it was to no advantage for the Warriors, as they failed to score. The third quarter saw Ken Werner open up and make the first Warrior touchdown. The extra point was not made after two attempts. The score remained 6-6 until the last two minutes of the game. Hawk quarterback, Gary Lang, was injured. Reserve quarterback, Hugh Rodham, was called in and completed a 30-yard pass to win the game. The first victory for Maine West came against New Trier when the Warriors defeated the Cowboys 12-6. The Warriors came close to falling behind in the fourth quarter when fullback Mike Fabry scored from the 4-yard line and made the score 6 to 6. Luckily the extra point attempt failed. Randy Selig sprang his quick kick talent on the Cowboys and booted one 50 yards and another 45 yards. From the Cowboy's 28-yard line Bob Banger threw a completed pass to the 14-yard line to John Szaltis and then went in for the score. Halfway in the fourth quarter the Cowboys made their move and made the T.D. with several completed passes. When the Warriors got the ball, Banger took to the air and connected with Jim Mueting. Once again Szaltis took the ball in for the win. The final score was Maine 12, New Trier 6. |
