Sports Slants

By MIKE WISNIEWSKI

Several of the Intramural Sports tournaments have now been completed; golf, tennis, and the junior and senior football tournaments. However, there has been one notable lack in each of these events: participation.

Out of approximately 275 boys in the Senior Class less than 20 showed up for their football tournament. There were only two classes participating in the entire event. In the Junior Class golf tournament there were no participants at all.

Occasionally two classes of boys who have the same gym coach are forced to combine their teams to meet the minimum number required for a regulation game.

Usually the Sophomore and Freshman Classes have the best turnouts for their tournaments, with four or five extra players for each team. It appears that the older a student gets, the less he or she participates in Intramurals.

Of course, many students have good reasons why they don't participate in the Intramural program. Some have jobs or have to catch buses, while others may want to spend some time with boy friends or girl friends.
For the first time in history Maine West will be playing its Homecoming game under the lights tonight. The purchasing of those $40,000 lights seems to have been a very good investment. Each light-tower is approximately 100 feet high. How would you like to replace a light bulb way up there?

Most of the students seem very pleased that we have finally obtained the new lights for our school. After speaking to Mr. Kenneth Olson, head of the Physical Education Department, and to some fellow students, it is easy to see why our attendance at games this year should be better than past years.

The people in Des Plaines who want to attend a game can better do so on a Friday night rather than a busy Saturday afternoon. Students feel the night games are better because the temperature is cooler at this time.

In our new League this year, the Central Suburban Conference, Maine South is the giant in all sports. Even though the league is well-balanced, South is considered the team to beat.

The Warriors are returning from two tough away games to play Glenbrook South in this year's Homecoming game.

Everyone wants to win tonight's game, but injuries to key players could be a big factor. Look for a continued strong running game.
