| To honor the late Harold G. Baer, bronze tablets were placed outside the two entrances to the spectator areas of the pool after a memorial assembly October 19. This physical education teacher and varsity swimming coach died Easter Sunday after a brief illness. Mr. Baer was the past president of the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches' Association and of the Midwest Swimming Coaches' Association. Last spring the idea of the Harold G. Baer Natatorium was presented to Student Council and adopted. This is the first time a program and memorial has been presented at Maine West, although other Maine schools have had memorials for members of the administration. |
Participating in the service were Principal Herman L. Rider, Athletic Director Kenneth E. Olson, Reverend R. K. Wobbe, Assistant Suerpintendent Ralph J. Frost, Jr., Superintendent Dr. Richard R. Short, and Mr. Baer's widow, Mrs. Baer. The seating capacity for the assembly was limited so only the Senior Class, swimming team, and others who knew Coach Baer well were invited to the seventh period assembly. "Teachers and students remember him as a kind, sincere teacher who placed his students' welfare above all else, always striving to help them become not only better swimmers but better citizens. His friendly smile, sense of humor, and interest in all of his students will long be remembered," commented Mr. Herman L. Rider. |
