Gridmen Smash Deerfield |
|||||||||
| The Maine West Warriors completely trounced the Deerfield squad last Saturday. The final score was 32-0. Touchdowns were scored by Bob Banger, Ken Werner, and Ron Hartley. The first half ended with a score of 7-0. The third quarter saw three touchdowns made and a score of 25-0. In the fourth and final quarter came the fifth touchdown. Eagerness and determination, as witnessed in the Warriors' decisive victory over Glenbrook South, was carried over to the Deerfield gridiron. Although no scoring came in the first quarter, the Warriors' attack was strong. The first Warrior touchdown came in the second quarter with Bob Banger taking the ball in from one yard out. In the third quarter the fans saw three Warrior touchdowns made. Quarterback Bob Banger bombed the ball 59 yards and connected for a touchdown. Fullback Ken Werner showed his talent with several good runs, three of which ended in the end zone. Of the three touchdowns made by Ken Werner, one was a 51 yard run for 6 points. The extra point attempt failed and the score remained 19-0. The 19-0 score did not satisfy the Warrior fullback. Several plays later Ken Werner ran the ball in from the 3-yard line, and a score of 26-0 prevailed. Finally, Ron Hartley, who has been out of action most of the season, took possession of the ball on the 8-yard line and went in to the end zone to make the final score 32-0. Once again the Warriors had trouble making the extra points. Out of the five |
attempts only two were successful. Among the spectacular plays made by the Warriors were three interceptions, a run that almost went all the way, and a total of 132 yards gained by one player. Lee Rodin intercepted two Deerfield passes and thereby enabled two of the touchdowns to be made. Randy Selig intercepted one pass late in the fourth quarter. Lee Rodin ran the ball from deep in Warrior territory to the 4-yard line of Deerfield. Ken Werner, Warrior fullback, ran the ball and gained a total of 132 yards. This was a fantastic display of gridiron play. The sophomore team went down in valiant defeat 7-0. The Maine West Warriors made this year's Homecoming a complete success by defeating Glenbrook South 26-0. The Warriors proved that they were a determined ball team when they completely dominated the action against the Glenbrook South squad. Before a capacity crowd the Maine West Warriors showed their determination to win and gave a worthy exhibition. Touchdowns were made by Roy Hellmer, Randy Selig, and Jim Meuting. Roy Hellmer went in from the 8-yard line. Sellg went in twice-once in the first period and again in the second. Meuting went in from the 8-yard line. Then Hellmer was hit again with a pass from quarterback Bob Banger. Les Roland, the biggest Warrior tackle, made his first appearance since he broke his arm earlier in the season's play. |
