Harriers Take Championship

Both the varsity and frosh-soph cross country squads became Conference champions last Saturday morning. The Warriors defeated the eight other teams in the Central Suburban League at Glenbrook South in the annual Conference meet.

The varsity harriers trampled their opponents in the race as they finished first with 32 points against second place New Trier West's 71 points.

Each school was allowed to enter seven varsity and seven frosh-soph runners.

Warrior Lee LaBadie won the varsity race with a time of 9:12. Pete Klages placed fifth in the race; Bill Deuser, sixth; Gary Smith, ninth; Kurt Christensen, eleventh; Bob Glitz, twelfth; and Scott Lewis, fourteenth.

The sophomores, however, just edged Deerfield 48-50. They are still undefeated.

Dave Lashway was first for Maine, finishing fourth; Mark Frasier was seventh; John Contreras, tenth; Wilbur Anderson, thirteenth; Doug Keehn, fourteenth; Steve Johnson, seventeenth; and Jerry Krainik, twentieth.

In a previous meet on October 10, Maine's varsity beat Deerfield at Deerfield 17-42. LaBadie was first in 10:06 with Deuser and Klages following.

The next Thursday they also beat Niles
North 19-44, followed by a Saturday victory over For-est View, 17-45. Both races were held here. On October 17 the thinclads went to Niles West and beat them 19-46.

LaBadie finished first in each race with Deuser and Klages following him. On the frosh. soph level, Deerfield was beaten 18-43, and Niles North was scalped 18-45 with Johnson winning both races.

Contreras won the race against Forest View, who lost 22-36; and Doug Keehn finished first against Niles West, who Maine beat 16-47.

Coaches Bill Barringer and Ross Blake are keeping the team in top shape. lithe Warriors can go downstate, it certainly will be a feather in their bonnet. Tomorrow, when they go to Schiller Park Woods for the District meet, they'll be facing such teams as Arlington, Evanston, Maine South, New Trier East, and York.

Because only two teams from each District can go downstate to Urbana, some of the best schools in the state will be left out-maybe even Maine West. Maine finished seventh in State last year.

However, Evanston was first and York was third. Both teams are in this District. Other schools are beset with the same problem, and a number of coaches are determined to see that this practice doesn't occur next year.
