Warrior of the West

If you happen to attend a Maine West cross country meet and see a runner wearing a band around his head with a feather sticking out, you'll know it's William Elliot Deuser more commonly known as "Willy."

"Willy" Deuser is a 5'9" brown-haired, brown-eyed gent who tips the scales at 125 pounds. He has been participating in cross country all four years at West and has earned on letter in that sport.

Bill was honored as the Most Valuable Player during his sophomore year in cross country. He had his fastest two-mile run clocked in at 10:23 during a recent meet. "Willy" assured The Westerner that he wou1d do his best to try to top that time.

When it comes to endurance, "Willy" admits that cross country is one of the most demanding of all athletic sports. During the summer Bill ran two miles a day. "Three to four miles a day," explained Bill, "is an average practice run."
When asked if it is painful to run such long distances, "Willy" replied, "It should be painful if you are doing it right. That means putting yourself all out to do your best." Bill proceeded with "Concentration on pacing is a must."

The cross country team has a record of 10 wins and one loss. "Willy" credits the winning record to excellent material, tremendous coaches, and teamwork.

Bill Deuser plays a big role in the success of the cross country team. Usually he takes second place in cross country meets. "Willy" runs best in chilly or brisk weather.

Although cross country is his favorite participation sport, he admits to being fascinated by gymnastics, his favorite spectator sport. Bill confesses that the high-bar is his favorite event in a gymnastics meet.

During his spare time "Willy" plays drums in a combo named the Trans-Atlantic Strawberry Side-Walk.
