| The president of Boys' Club, a class council representative, and a member of M-Club are some of the titles that will follow Larry Kahler's name in The Legend. Standing 5' 10" and weighing 165 pounds, this 17-year-old senior also has been a member of the track team, participating in the sprint and the broad jump, for three years. As the president of Boys' Club, Larry's job is to lead and organize the meetings and appoint committees. Because the biggest function performed annually by the club is the Christmas Formal, Larry urges that "everybody come out." One of the things that bothers Larry about the school is "the kids who stand around waiting to be bumped into." He also feels that there aren't enough school sponsored activities such as record hops. "I'm not employed; I can't afford out of town prices." To cut corners, the "Jack Benny of Maine West" also admitted that he walks to school to save on the bus fare and has given up eating lunch. He spends that free half period thinking of all he's going to eat when he gets home (where he doesn't have to pay for the food). When they're free, Larry's favorite foods are steak, shrimp, and peanut butter sandwiches. "They go great with steak and shrimp." His hobbies are girls and playing basketball but not necessarily in that order. He also loves movies of any kind. The one day Larry would like to remember is the day in eighth grade when he held a pencil point-up on his friend's chair. "I was doing it as a joke to see what would happen, but I guess he didn't have any reflexes because he sat down and the point kind of broke off. The next day the guy had to get a tetanus shot." Although he's tried very hard, he says he'll never forget the time he forgot the tickets to his eighth grade graduation dance and his date had to pay at the door. When asked what he liked best about the school, this senior said with a big smile, "The new paint - no, probably the teachers; they're friendly." After thinking about it, Larry said that the thing he likes least about Maine West is the general lack of enthusiasm by some of the students - "The kids who don't try." He feels there is an over-all lack of in-terest by the majority. "It's too bad, but it's the truth." When asked about his future plans, Larry said that he would like to go to Northern and major in accounting. |
The 6' 2", 200-pound frame that is Monty Abbott leads M-Club as its president. Monty has taken interest in Maine West for the past four years. He has served on class council, Student Council and M-Club for several years. Monty states about M-Club, "M-Club is a great organization; it represents the best athletes in our school. To be in M-Club is the reward of months of hard work and practice. It is a great honor for me to be the president of this organization." When asked what M-Club planned for the future, Monty replied, "Well, we're going to have a donkey basketball game this year. Last time we had one the kids really enjoyed it, and the turnout was good. We also are going to hold the annual M-Club-faculty game. This year M-Club is going to win!" Monty has an interest in all sports but finds football and track his favorites. He participates in these sports and reveals, "I like the contact; that is why I like football. Football takes a team effort. Everyone has to do his part. One bad block can make a good play a disaster. "I try to do my best. In football I try to knock the guy from the other team flat on his back. Track is the same way. I try to do my best. Then if I lose, I can say to myself or to anyone, 'I did all I could!' " Monty asserted, "The participation of the kids in school activities is good but could be better. Because of this lack of interest, it is very hard to plan activities for the students at Maine." "The enthusiasm of the boys isn't as good as it should be, but it is improving," commented Monty when asked how this year's M-Club is coming along. Monty applied to Bowling Green College and the University of Illinois but does not, as of now, know which one he will attend next fall. He wants to go into the field of dentistry and someday in the near future become a dentist. "I sincerely hope that the students of Maine West will take part in the M-Club projects as well as all school activities" was Monty's closing remark. |
