VOL. IX, NO. 4
NOVEMBER 17, 1967

'Oh, Hail to Thee...'

Our alma mater may never be heard again. The respect and cooperation shown by the crowds at many of Maine West's games leaves much to be desired.

Everyone showed such great cooperation that each time the cheerleaders attempted to get a cheer started, it died out before it had a chance. The attention given not only the cheerleaders but to the band was highly commendable.

Four gentlemen nonchalantly played cards during the singing of the National Anthem. Two others were messing each other's hair during the proceedings. The near capacity crowd sounded like a bunch of old ladies at a sewing bee when asked to cheer or sing.

Why do people come to the games if they refuse to cheer our team to victory? The football players were determined to win the game of October 13 for the simple reason that it was our Homecoming game, and a victory would make the 1967 Homecoming festivities complete.
They were determined to win for the students of Maine West. How do these grateful students show their appreciation for the team? They refuse to take part in cheers; they won't sing the pep song or the alma mater; and they can barely find it in their willpower to rise for the kick-offs. In the opinion of the observer, the "Sound of Victory" was rather faint!

One cross-country runner stated that "The determination to win is not as strong if you feel that the students don't care if you win or lose." Unfortunately this attitude is shared by many of the athletes. But can anyone blame them for feeling this way?

We are willing to share in the glory of a team's victory, but the number willing to whole-heartedly back our teams is practically nil.

It is up to us to make use of the privileges we are given. Most of us don't realize that it is a privilege to show support for our teams just as it is to share their victories. The rebellious attitude shown by the majority of students is getting us nowhere.

Although the fall sports are concluded, there is still time to act and show support! Part of the destiny of these teams rests in the hands of the student body. What will it be-victory or defeat? The decision is ours to make.
