'My' Receives Support From Maine West |
|||||||||
| Maine West's foster child, Hoang Nhut My, celebrated her eleventh birthday on November 8. Since Vietnamese children are considered a year old when they are born, she is a year older in Viet Nam than she would be in the United States. Student Council has supported "My" (Vietnamese children are referred to by their last names) through general Council funds since she has been attending school. "My" receives $15 each month which pays for her schooling and supports her family. "My" was given to Maine West through PLAN. This organization handles the money and translates the various letters. Also articles such as soap, clothing, slippers, etc. (which are not available in Viet Nam) are sent to her. Their small 12'x12' home stands in the fourth district near Saigon in Viet Nam. Two beds, a clothes closet, some tables and chairs are the extent of their furnishings; and these were purchased during the time when their family was better off financially. |
"My's" family consists of her mother and father and three children all younger than she. Last fall her father was ill with TB, and "My's" mother had to work earning only $55 a week. Young children enjoy looking at pictures, and "My" is no exception. She is thrilled over postcards and pictures sent to her from any of her American parents. This year Student Council is going to create a collage of pic-tures made of members of Student Council and send it to "My" for Christmas. Also this year, a collection of "My's" letters, pictures, and information will be on a bulletin board in the cafeteria. This will be available for all students who wish to read her letters or are interested in the Student Council project. In recent years Student Council has collected postcards and Christmas cards and sent them to "My." Last year a gift of $10 was sent to her and her family to enjoy their holidays. Diana Quinn '68, treasurer of Student Council, encourages any students at Maine West who are interested in sending our foster child cards or pictures, to place them in the Student Council box or to give them to Diana. |
