Sports Slants

By MIKE WISNIEWSKI

Throughout the year the frosh-soph teams have for the most part been neglected in our illustrious sports page and now they have their moment!

Coach Dave Kennedy's Cougars (better known as the freshman A football team clawed their way to a Central Suburban League Championship. With their final victory over Niles West 14-0 they ended their season with a 5-1-1 record.

Dave Arnswald was the field general for the mighty Cougars, and he usually teamed up with his back Nick Fininis to score many a point. Nick was chosen as the team's Most Valuable Player and was the team's leading scorer.

Right with Nick in scoring was Jim Hanselmann, one of the team's leading scorers. Keith Moranz makes up the third member of this freshmen scoring trio. Honorary team captain was Mark Mayer who along with tough Larry Portmann and Russell Zage gave the Little Warriors a solid front line.
The frosh-soph cross country team captured first place for Maine in the new conference with an undefeated season. Coach Ross Blake's Badgers are to be commended for their hard won victory in a conference as tough as ours is. Mr. Blake picked several boys for their outstanding work during the whole season.

These boys are Ken Lashway, Lidinsky for his showing in the Niles Invitational, and John Contreras, and Willy Anderson. One boy who stood out this season was Scott Gyssler who, in the last home meet of the season, ran the second fastest mile on our home track.

Scott also is a member of the swimming team, and such a combination is rare. It is generally thought that swimming and running are supposedly incompatible.
