MW Debate Team Enters Tournament

Maine West's Dads' Club has made a donation toward the purchase of trophies for the First Maine West Debate Tournament to be held on Saturday, February 24, at Maine West. This will become an annual event.

Mr. Clayton E. Mott presented the check at the beginning of this month to Mr. Merel Marine, coordinator of the debate and sponsor of the National Forensic League at Maine West.

Mr. Marine stated, "I think that Maine West has some very good chances in the debate tournament."

Del Hachimi '68, this year's A.F.S. student, is on the Debate Team and will participate in the tournament. Del said he is "really impressed with the Debate Team." He feels that Maine West has some "very good debaters and has an excellent chance in the tournament."
The debate tournament will feature four rounds of debate on three levels - varsity, junior varsity, and novice. Trophies will be awarded to the three best speakers in each division.

Craig Dudczak '69, an active debater, appraises the coming event saying, "Our chances are good if we can develop a reasonably sound case and if we have luck in the draw."

In the team's most recent debate, junior varsity won six and lost two. John Chips '69 and Karen Gatsis '70 of the negative team won four out of four debates. On the novice level affirmative debater Toni Hein '70 and Mary Jo Gigante '70 won three out of four debates.

More than 20 schools will attend the tournament to debate the 1967-68 National Debate topic: "Congress should establish uniform regulations to control criminal investigation procedures." The debates will bring up vital questions on wire-tapping, search and seizure laws, and the nation's crime wave.
