Library Supplements Sex Education |
|||||||||
| Rarely does one choose the library as a storehouse of easily available, practical knowledge; but a section of our library may educate one in a subject academically discussed in health classes-sex. The dangers of illegal abortion, the disgrace of unwed parenthood, the problems of teen-age marriages, the seriousness of venereal disease, and the question of pre-marital relationships are factually, open-mindedly discussed in the variety of articles available. Books by Ann Landers and Evelyn Millis Duval supplement the selection. Panels, filmstrips, and lectures are a part of the girls' sex education classes. Human reproduction, dating, and marriage are some of the topics investigated in the freshman and senior years. The boys' program differs |
slightly. All students, however, may take advantage of the knowledge that is collected in the library. Exposure to fanciful ideas of sex expressed in movies and books confuses many students. Lives of "stars" as depicted in magazines and newspapers may also influence opinions held by youth. The articles selected by the Physical Education Department treat sex as a natural response with certain responsibilities. The department aims to stimulate home discussion and a greater understanding of our society's mores. Questions may be answered; problems may be solved; certainly accurate information will be given by taking advantage of the services the Physical Education Department and the library offer. |
