Junior City Officials Preside for Week

Twenty-five Maine West juniors recently completed their tour of duty as Des Plaines city officials in honor of Youth Appreciation Week.

On Saturday, November 11, the junior city officials received their badges of position with that of mayor going to Maine West's Judy Nitzche. All positions were decided upon by drawing names from a hat.

The Saturday tours included the Des Plaines police, water, and fire departments. The officials attended a Veteran's Day ceremony at the memorial park. The day ended with a lunch, courtesy of the Elk's Club, augmented by speeches from Mayor Herbert Behrel and Optimists Club officers, the join sponsors of Youth Appreciation Week.

The highlight of the week was a trip to Chicago on Wednesday, November 15, during school. After a tour of the Fire Academy and the Cook County Morgue, the officials retired to the Cook County Jail for a lunch prepared completely by the inmates.

The next night, the junior officials and their parents were treated to a banquet at Christ's Church. Guest speaker was the warden of the Cook County Jail, who rendered a discourse about inmates and ex-convicts.
On Saturday, November 18, the officials took their last tour surveying Central Telephone Company and Forest Mental Hospital, completing the day with a banquet at the Elk's Club.

Youth Appreciation Week was culminated by a City Council meeting attended by the junior officials where they met their respective senior officials.
