| Once again the gymnastics season has arrived, and the Maine West gymnasts have been practicing since the sixth of November. Mr. Sidney Drain is coaching the varsity squad again this year, while Mr. Anton Soucek is the head of the frosh-soph team. When asked which teams would be toughest in Conference, Mr. Drain replied, "Niles West and Maine West." He also thought that Evanston, Maine East, and Prospect would be the best teams in State competition. Mr. Drain asserted the upcoming gymnastics season should be 'interesting. It all depends on how the teams shape up between now and Christmas." West's first meet will be December 2 when we challenge the Prospect Knights at Prospect. December 12 is the first scheduled home meet, although our first Conference meet is not until January 13 when we take on Glenbrook South. Then on January 26 |
we meet archrival Maine South. There will be six Conference meets and 10 non-Conference meets. As far as who will be on what apparatus, some positions are indefinite and vacant yet. So far, on trampoline will be Jim Janssens '69, Tom Tyler '69, and Royle Epperson '69. On side horse will be Steve Fox '68, Rich Suda '68, Bob Moehiing '69, Kurt Nagel '69, or Marc Forkins '69. On parallel bars will be Rich Suda '68, Rich Didier '69, and Bob Suda '69. Out for the still rings are Jim Janssens, Bryant Ways '69, George Corcoran '68, and Jerry Allegretti '69. The tumblers are Bill Johnson '69, Al Van Ornum '69, Royle Epperson, and Rich Suda again. The only returning letterman this year is Rich Suda. Our weak positions seem to be the high bar and the rings. The Maine West gymnasts are trying to improve upon their record of last year. |
