| Of all the schools in the Conference, swimming Coach Peter Andersen feels that "Deerfield, Maine South, and Niles North-in that order" will be Maine West's toughest opponents. When asked his outlook on the season Coach Andersen stated, "The team needs another sprinter, butterflier, and individual medley man." He also said that more freshmen are needed to round out the team. Maine has four returning lettermen: Dan Brinkman '68, Jim Greenwald '68, Chris Olander '69, and Mike Teegen '68. Two of Maine's outstanding swimmers this year are Chris Olander, who specializes in the 100-yard back stroke, and Dan Brinkman who swims the sprints. Coach Andersen emphasized his statement that the team needs more freshmen and added that 'Once you're in, you stay in-unless you quit of your own accord." He also remarked that everyone gets a chance to swim, if not in a meet then in exhibition. Whether one has the ability to swim well or not is not ex-tremely important. According to Coach Andersen, "If a boy has a desire, he can succeed." |
Practice is not easy; it consists of approximately two and one-half miles of swimming after school. The coach commented, "There are no short cuts to winning." He also said that if Maine is going to have a winning team, "They're going to pay the price." In the diving department Mike Teegen '68 and Terry Matja '70 are Maine's outstanding men. When asked about the team's potential, the coach replied that there are many young swimmers being developed in the Park District swim program. Coach Andersen pointed out that he can give a boy as many as seven months of training a year: three months in the summer and four months during the school year. A varsity swimmer when asked his opinion of Coach Andersen replied, "He's a good coach. He's worked us harder than we've been worked before." Before Coach Andersen came to Maine this year, he coached at the Bloomington Swim Club. This is his first high school coaching job. He stressed the fact that any boy wishing to join the team is more than welcome. If anyone else is interested, he may contact Coach Andersen. |
