Grapplers Win Two |
|||||||||
| Maine West's varsity grapplers suffered their first defeat of the season last Friday when they fell to Morton West by a score of 26-14. This followed, however, a 43-9 victory at Oak Park. The meet at Morton West started out nicely enough when Warriors Jim Webster and Gary Curtin dealt defeats to Morton's Stacney and Cleveland, 4-0 and 8-5 respectively. Kurt Christensen, Dave Grutzius, and Tom Helms then lost, however, before Warrior Jim Klein pinned Hess. Tom Meitus was then pinned in the last period, and Steve Waecker also lost before Jim Morrison beat his opponent. Geoff Sorenson, John Szaltis, and Jim Weiser then lost to end the meet. It was generally a bad day for Maine West. The junior varsity lost 29-23; the sophs fell 30-18; and the frosh did the same 29-18. The Warriors fared better at Oak Park the previous Saturday. Among the varsity winners in that meet were |
Webster and 103-pound Curtin, who wasted little time-about 30 seconds -in pinning his opponent. Christensen beat his opponent before Grutzius did likewise with a pin. Helms got a tie, while Klein and Meitus continued the fun with a pair of victories. Waecker was pinned, but Morrison did the same to his man. Sorenson then won 8-3; Szaltis tied; and heavyweight Weiser pinned his opponent to end the meet. The junior varsity did not do quite as well. The middle weights were weak, and the squad was edged 24-20. The sophs also lost 33-10. The freshmen, however, scored an impressive 41-15 victory when the majority of Warrior victories were pins. If the Barrington forfeiture is included, both the varsity and frosh squads possess won two lost one records, and the sophs have a 1-2 standing. The J.V., which was not included against Barrington, stand at 0-2. The Warriors have their first Conference meet today, when they travel to New Trier West. |
