Tankers Set Swim Records

One highlight of Friday's swim meet was that half of the team broke their previous records. "A new school record was set by a freshman, Skip Parent, who swam varsity in the 400-yard free style," says Maine West's swim coach, Mr. Peter Andersen.

The old school record had been 4:37 set in 1964. "Parent went 4:31 to smash the old record," Mr. Andersen further explained. "All in all, we swam very well; but Glenbrook North was a shade faster in a few events."

Mr. Andersen has hopes that Chris Olander will do better in the 100-yard backstroke. Dan Brinkman '68 and Ted Loska '69 "work very hard, but they still need to go a little faster in the meets."

Jim Lillquist and Chris Olander, both juniors, have dropped their times considerably. The coach also said that "Ted Loska has developed into a fine
breast stroke swimmer because of the time he spent working out with the Park District team this last summer.

"We need a few more freshman and sophomore swimmers. Many students who have the ability feel that they are not good enough to make it. This is not at all true. Dan Brinkman, a senior, never swam during his freshman year; yet he has become our work horse this year," said Coach Andersen. In summary, the coach said, "We need a little more depth in a few events yet."

Some of the better timings are as follows: Ted Loska '69, 1:52.5 (200-yard relay); Skip Parent '71, 2:06.1 and Howard Peterson '69, 2:10.6 (200-yard free style); Dan Brinkman '68, 23.5 and John Harrisville '68, 26.2 (50-yard free style); Chris Olander '69, 2:06.7 (200-yard individual medley).
