Jane Engle Receives Achievement Award

"Well, I've finally beaten the system!" was the comment of Jane Engle '68 when she learned that she had been named a runner-up in the annual Achievement Awards competition of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Jane was one of 800 finalists selected out of 8,000 high school students representing schools from 50 states, the District of Columbia, and American Preparatory Schools abroad.

Jane - along with four other students from Maine West: Bob Connelly '68, Don Maruska '68, Frank Schulz '68, and Frank Grange '68 - was nominated for the competition by Maine's English Department last spring.
Jane's essay, entitled "My Brother," is the second one to gain for Maine West the distinction of holding the position of runner-up in this competition. Nancy Carlson '66 was the 1965 national runner-up in the annual Awards competition.

The Council recommends these students for college scholarships in 1968. The names of the winners and runners-up are sent to every college and university in the country. Jane's first choice is Swarthmore in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She is also interested in Radcliffe, Oberlin, and has been accepted by the University of Illinois.

Executive secretary of the NCTE, Mr. James R. Squire, announced the winners and recommended these students for college scholarships. The winners and runners-up received scrolls of recognition and honors, and the high schools' English Departments received certificates of merits.
