| Doug Fager, a Maine West senior, has been chosen by the American Field Service as one of the lucky few out of 6,000 applicants to be sent abroad as a foreign exchange student. On January 24 Doug will leave the sub-zero temperatures of Des Plaines to fly to New York and then on to the 80 degree temperatures of Brazil. He has not yet been notified of his exact destination nor about the family he will be staying with. Doug was one of the finalists chosen last November to represent Maine West in New York. On January 5 he received a telephone call from the local AFS chapter informing him of his selection. "When I first heard the great news," recalls Doug, "I was so overwhelmed that it took me a while to grasp the whole situation. Now I'm really looking forward to the trip, but I still find it hard to believe that in two weeks I'll be in Brazil." Before he leaves, Doug will be taking a crash course in Portuguese, the official language of Brazil. However, he may also be able to use English since it is spoken and understood in many areas of Brazil. |
Doug will be handing his duties as V-Show coordinator over to some other senior. Other school activities he will be leaving behind are Choraliers, Concert Choir, Ski Club, and varsity tennis. He will graduate in Brazil and plans to return sometime late this year to enter college at the semester. A new foreign exchange student will be coming to Maine West the second semester, but not through AFS. Olavo Riebero will be coming to Des Plaines from Rio de Janiero, Brazil, and will be sponsored by the Youth for Understanding Teenage Exchange Program. His host family will be Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Weaver of Des Plaines. Last summer Kathie Weaver '69 spent three months in Rio de Janiero under this program and became acquainted with Olavo. According to Kathie, Olavo is "a tall, thin boy who is very friendly and speaks fairly fluent English." Olavo is 15 years old and will enter as a sophomore. He arrives next Monday and will stay with the Weaver family until sometime in June. This will be Olavo's first trip to America. |
