| Those who didn't attend last Saturday's varsity basketball ball game at Wheeling missed a Warrior win by a score of 55-54. Actually, the game itself was for the most part not very exciting. Although the score was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter and Maine led at the half by a score of only 30-28, it was still early; and the crowd wasn't too concerned. Most of Harry Tistle's game total of 17 points was scored after the half, and Maine was cushioned on a 12-point lead midway through the last quarter. Then, the Warriors created the most interesting fourth quarter of the season. They started off by letting Wheeling score a few consecutive baskets. The crowd helped the Wildcats gain momentum and eventually catch up. It then generally remained a see-saw battle until Hatten fouled Warrior Ted Waskowski with the score tied 54-54 and 12 seconds left in the game. Waskowski made the first free throw, missed the second, and thus reduced greatly the chances of overtime. Wheeling hurriedly took the ball down to their basket and shot. The ball bounced on the rim a few times as it was batted in opposite directions. Finally, an unidentified Warrior pulled the ball down. The gun sound-ed a second later to end the game. |
Things weren't quite so exciting at the Proviso West Christmas tournament. The Warriors immediately lost to Riverside -Brookfield 69-36, where Bruce Kaechele scored 15 points for Maine. The cagers then entered the consolation round where, although they defeated East Leyden 55-43, they took a 71-41 beating by Thornridge, who went on to win the consolation round. Evanston won the tournament. Maine encountered similar misfortune at Glenbrook North December 22; the netmen slowly lost ground to the Spartans throughout the game and lost 46-34. The week before, however, saw the Warriors down New Trier West 59-46. The junior varsity was losing by seven points at the half at Wheeling but bounced back to win 54-49. They also beat Glenbrook North 50-48 and New Trier West 57-39. Although the sophs lost to Wheeling 90-69 and Glenbrook 37-36 in overtime, they edged New Trier 44-43. The frosh beat Wheeling 50-40 and Glenbrook 46-39. |
