Matmen Whip GB North, Crush New Trier West |

| Third place was taken by the varsity grapplers last Saturday at the Forest View quadrangular. Forest View won its own contest, followed by New Trier East. Elmwood Park was fourth. Steve Waecker and John Szaltis each were champions of their respective weight classes. Gary Curtin, Dave Grutzius, and Tom Helms all finished second. Third place winners were Jim Wieser, Kurt Christensen, and Jim Klein, while Jim Webster, Rick Lucente, and Jim Morrison placed fourth. The Warriors really enjoyed themselves the night before against Glenbrook North when they won 36-8. Jim Webster started the meet with a decision victory, followed by Curtin. Christensen pinned his man, while Grutzius and Helms followed suit with a pair of victories. Jim Mach got a win before Lucente lost by decision. However, Waecker pinned his man preceding Morrison's victory. Maine next lost by a forfeit, but John Szaltis handed out a pin with 18 seconds to go in his match. Weiser then won to end the meet. |
Maine West was also relatively successful at the Lake Park quadrangular on December 30. Although Arlington won the contest with 102 points, Maine placed second with 78, followed by Lake Park and Glenbard East with 57 and 44 points respectively. Four boys were champions of their own weight classes. These were Curtin, 103 pounds; Waecker, 145 pounds; Szaltis, 180 pounds; and Wieser, heavyweight. The matmen were not quite so successful against Proviso West December 19. Maine fell to the Panthers 32-12. On December 15 the Warriors traveled to New Trier West. Here they encountered better luck, as they defeated their opponent by a score of 31-16. Until the Glenbrook North event that had been their only Conference meet. Although their dual meet record is 4-2, the matmen's Conference record now stands at 2-0. The junior varsity picked up seven wins, including five pins, against Glenbrook North to score a 38-18 victory. Although they lost to Proviso; a victory was gained at New Trier West. The sophs also defeated Glenbrook 32-18, after victories against both Proviso and New Trier. The freshmen defeated Glenbrook 36-16. Although they just squeaked by Proviso 23-21, the mini-grapplers mauled New Trier 46-8. |
