| The Maine West varsity swim team took an eighth place tie last Saturday when they went t compete in the Riverside invitational. The contest included over 25 teams, some from as far away as Peoria, Champaign, and Danville. Rock Island captured first place. Chris Olander, Dan Brinkman, and Ted Loska made it to the meet's finals. Olander took fourth place in the 200-yard individual medley and a fifth place in the 100-yard backstroke. Brinkman captured third in both the 50 and 100-yard free styles, while Loska took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke. Four school records were broken by the Warriors when they hosted Elgin on December 20. In the meet which Maine won 56-39, Brinkman not only changed the old 200-yard free style record from 2:02 to 2:01.2, but also swam the 100-yard freestyle in 52.2, eight-tenths of a second faster than the old record. Skip Parent shaved a full three seconds off his own school record of 4:31.7 in the 400-yard free style. Although Olander lost first place by a hair in the |
200-yard individual medley, his time was identical to the winner's. He therefore shares the new school and pool record of 2:13.3. In contrast to this success, the tankers fell 57-38 to New Trier West in a meet that Coach Peter Andersen described as something less than spectacular. However, Coach Andersen has been generally pleased with the swimmers. He has been quite satisfied with the skill and effort produced thus far, especially at Riverside. He has also been contemplating the future. Two up-and-coming stars on the varsity are freshman Scott Gyssler, who has been described as "very versatile," and Skip Parent, already a record-breaker. "It's nice to have Skip, but he realizes that the original records were pretty poor to begin with," said Coach Andersen. The rest of the frosh-sophs have also been doing well. Although they lost to New Trier West, they destroyed Elgin 75-20. |
