| The Debate Team participated in two tournaments recently one at Rich East High School on December 16 and the other at Oak Park-River Forest on January 13. At Rich East the novice team took third place out of 20 schools. The affirmative team was composed of Toni Hem '70 and Mary Jo Gigante '70. The negative team included Kathy Clarke '71 and Diane Glanke '69. Toni Hem won the best speaker trophy in the novice division, competing against approximately 80 other students. Craig Dudczak '69 took the title, fourth place speaker, on the junior varsity level. In the Oak Park-River Forest debate, the novice team captured third place out of 33 schools. The novice team consisted of Toni Hem and Diane Glanke, negative; and Rich Janecek '70 and Mary Jo Gigante, affirmative. The proposition for the whole year is "Resolved: That Congress Should Establish Uniform Regulations to Control Criminal Investigation Procedures." |
The Debate Team also took an overnight trip to Carbondale, Illinois on the fifth and sixth of January. A total of 33 schools rented a train to compete against southern schoo1s. Maine's result was 11 wins out of 20 debates. "The novice team is doing very well, and they are pushing experienced debaters for varsity positions next year. But in all fairness to experienced debaters, there are only 23 junior varsity debaters. I have been debating the varsity, so they have been doing very well," commented Mr. Merel Marine, debate coach. Craig Dudczak and Karen Gatsis '70 are entering the National Forensic League District of Illinois Tournament taking place January 26, 27, and February 2. 3. If they win. Karen and Craig will go on to compete in the National Tournament. The novice team will compete February 3 at Willowbrook. On February 10 all the teams are going to Highland Park to compete. February 23 is the date that Maine will host the tournament. Mr. Marine invites all students to come and watch students from 40 other schools debate. |
