| An orchestra-choral concert was presented Sunday, January 28, at 3 p.m. Participants were the Intermediate Orchestra, the Concert Orchestra, the Girls' Glee Club, and the Concert Choir. The Intermediate Orchestra, making its first appearance of the year, performed such numbers as Beethoven's "Song of Brotherhood" and Ernest Gold's main theme from "Exodus." A new course, entitled "current affairs," is being offered next fall by the Social Science Department. The course will be open to juniors and seniors who do not desire further education beyond high school. Since the students will not be using textbooks, they will, for the most part, be able to choose topics which interest them and are relevant to their lives. These topics may include urbanization, zoning, and pollution. Current affairs will be concerned with aspects of urban life as opposed to rural life, and domestic affairs rather than foreign affairs. |
Twenty-seven new members have been added to the Aquiana Swim Club for next year. Tryouts were held on December 4 and 11 with Mrs. Margaret McCaw, sponsor, and several officers of the club acting as judges. The girls who competed were required to swim strokes such as the front crawl, back crawl, side stroke, and breast stroke. Their abilities were also tested on water ballet stunts and dives. "March of Dimes" week, sponsored by Brotherhood Society, once again proved to be successful. Maine West students donated $615 which surpassed the original goal of $500. Class competition was not in effect this year so that students' incentive to give would be more meaningful. Would you like a German pen-pal? The teenagers available, who range in age from 13 to about 17, have studied English for two years and would be able to correspond in English. Most of them live in Stuttgart, a large city in southern Germany. The German teens are interested in the American way of life, American schools, sports, hit songs, and reading. If anyone is interested in having a pen-pal, he should contact Miss Rosalie Streng in A-215 |
