Maine South Edges West Wrestlers |
|||||||||
| With a greatly changed lineup, the Warrior varsity wrestling team was stung, 22-18, by the Maine South Hawks. The Warriors had no less than four changes as they lost valuable ground in their battle for second place in the CSL. The meet started out in West's favor when 95-pounder Jim Webster '69 decisioned the Hawk wrestler, Boran, 8-2. Then a replacement for the 103-pound class for West, Dave Keehn '70, fought to a 3-3 tie against the Maine South grappler, Rozny. At 112, Kurt Christensen '68 beat Eric Theor 6-1, gaining more valuable points for the Warriors. Hawk Reher shut out Warrior Dave Grutzius 5-0 in the 120-pound division. Hawk Neuses, who beat Warrior Kevin Sherwood '69 at 127, pounds, made the first pin of the meet in the time of 5:41. |
This put South in a 10-8 advantage that was advanced to 13-8 when Hawk Neuses smashed Warrior Dale Tomkins '70, 15-0. South crept ahead when Schussler beat Tom Mietus '69, 3-1, in a close 138-pound match. The Warriors got back in the game, though, at 145 when Steve Waecker '69 beat Matthem 2-0, Jim Morrison '69 did a good job of representing West as he edged out his South opponent. At 165 Maine South Hawk Miller took a Warrior forfeit, and then at 180 John Szaltis '68 pounced Hawk Holden 11-0. The meet then stood with the Hawks ahead 19-18. Tension filled the room as the heavyweight match was about to begin. Hawk Sigmund, who trounced Jim Weiser '68 in a 10-0 match, ended the tension while making all Maine West spectators a disappointed group. |
