Hairy Leg Contest To Raise Funds |
|||||||||
| March 4 through 8 is AFS Week. During this week Student Council sponsors various activities to help raise the money necessary for the support of next year's foreign exchange student. Plans are now being made for the week. According to Sue Odom '68, chairman of the AFS Committee, "It should be a very enjoyable week." On Monday the action will start with "Honor Del Hachimi Day." Del will be speaking at the morning homeroom assemblies, Monday through Thursday. The program will include color slides as Del describes his life in Morocco, his native country. A taffy apple sale will be held on Tuesday, March 5. The taffy apples will be sold after school at the head of the cafeteria, in the bus concourse, and at the end of C-wing. An ice cream social and bake sale will take place after school on Wednesday of AFS Week. The goods for the bake sale will be made by members of Student Council. Most of the items will be a dime or a nickel. Linda North '68 is in charge of the bake sale. Then on Thursday, March 7, a record hop will be held after school in the C-wing gym. Admission price is $.25, and a combo will play. Marilyn Hajost '68 is planning the record hop. Also on Thursday foreign exchange students from neighboring high schools will stay overnight at the homes of various Maine West students. The visiting students will then attend classes here on Friday. Cathy Newport '70 will supervise these activities. |
A special event of AFS Week will be the Hairiest Leg Contest. One boy will be chosen to rep-resent each class. Their legs will then be photographed, and the pictures will be put up in front of the cafeteria. Throughout the week students will be given an opportunity to vote during their lunch period. They may vote for the leg of their choice by dropping a donation into the milk bottle below the photograph they select. The entrants' names will not be given until the winner, who is the person with the most money in his bottle, is announced at the record hop on Thursday. Through these many projects Sue is hoping for the best AFS week ever. "Last year AFS Week was centered around a carnival theme," Sue explained. "This year we plan to write letters to the various club presidents and request donations." Sue emphasizes participation saying, "I urge all students to get involved and help make this AFS Week a big success!' Mr. Eldon Burk, dean of boys and the sponsor of Student Council, stated that he is "confident and optimistic that this year's AFS Week will turn out profitably." Members of the Student Council AFS Committee include: Joan Beyer '68, Bruce Blum '68, Linda North '68, Ted Waskowski '68, and Marilyn Hajost '68. Other members include: Maudy Gass '69, Bergit Loner-gran '69, Marilyn Kalata '69, Jim Webster '69, Cathy Newport '70, Mike Fairhead '71, Audrey Handling '71, and Sue Neumann '71. |
