Senior Girl Wins Awards

The Home Economics Department recently announced that Marilyn Schick '68 had been chosen as the winner of the Betty Crocker Search for the Homemaker of Tomorrow contest, as well as the Penny Flame Home Economics Award program.

The Betty Crocker Search for the Homemaker of Tomorrow contest was open to all high school seniors in the United States. The contest itself consisted of a written exam which covered all aspects of homemaking. There was also an essay question on the test.

The test was given on December 5 to interested high school students all over the United States. They were then sent in and graded by Science Research Associates. One winner was chosen from each of the schools participating in the contest.

There is also to be a winner, who will receive a $1,500 scholarship from each state. A national winner will be chosen from the state winners. The girl receiving this honor will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship.
Marilyn received a charm and a letter of commendation from General Mills, who sponsored the contest.

The Penny Flame Home Economics Award program, which is sponsored by the Northern Illinois Gas Company, was open to interested members of foods classes.

All participants were required to bake a cherry pie. These pies were judged by a committee here at school. This committee consisted of Mr. Herman Rider, principal; Mr. Wayne Rosenquist, Guidance Department chairman; Mrs. Marian Pedersen, counselor; and Mrs. Lucille Stiles, head of the Home Economics Department.

Marilyn will now go to the regional bake-off at the Northern Illinois Gas Company in Glenview on Saturday, March 9.

This is the first time that the same girl has won both of these contests in the same year here at Maine.

Stated Mrs. Stiles, "We're very pleased that Marilyn has achieved these honors in both contests. There were many capable and well qualified girls."
