Brotherhood Society Sponsors Elections |
|||||||||
| Although Brotherhood Week covers only seven days on the calendar, there is a society at Maine which functions to promote brotherhood throughout the year. The purpose of the Brotherhood Society is to inspire a spirit of friendship, cooperation, understanding, and harmony in our school, community, and country. An attempt is made to eliminate prejudice. Members of Brotherhood are elected by the student body annually during the week set aside to honor their cause. Each class has elected three boys and three girls whom they feel act according to the true spirit of brotherhood. New members of the society were announced and presented in assemblies yesterday. |
Tom Barrett '69, president, commented, "Many students feel that Brotherhood elections are merely popularity contests. In a sense they are, because those elected have extensive contact with the student body and therefore might be considered popular." Brotherhood Society sponsors a March of Dimes drive, a car wash, and a clothing drive to fulfill their purpose. Next year they also plan a campaign to acquaint new students with Maine and make them feel as though they belong. Other officers include Terry Newport '68, vice-president; and Sue Odom '68, secretary-treasurer. The sponsor is Mr. Paul McKinnis, counselor. |
