Gold Spades Start Work

Ground breaking for the new library to be built took place Monday, February 12. Dr. Richard Short, superintendent of schools, and Mr. Herman Rider, principal, were both presented with gold shovels as a remembrance of this occasion. Also participating in the ground breaking were many of the head contractors and school board members.

When the library addition is complete, it will provide extra seating for 122 students, additional carrels for independent study, and adequate audio-visual facilities. Also being added are library classroom and preview areas, larger stack areas, and new library offices.
Work is also being done in the fourth wing which will be located between the pool wing and the bus concourse. This wing will provide a spectator gymnasium which will include three teaching stations, three rocker rooms, and one additional health classroom.

Mr. Rider remarked, "The most important thing that is happening is that Maine West will finally have a big gymnasium which will be used for sports events and graduation."

It is planned that all additions will be completed and ready for occupancy in September of the 1969-70 school year.
