Services Improve Reading

Having trouble concentrating on long reading assignments? Can't raise those important grades? Unable to memorize the 25 vocabulary words? For nine years Maine West has offered a course to enable students to improve their reading skills, and it is offered to all students.

Each year freshmen are presented with a reading and comprehension skills test, in their English classes, which determines their previous knowledge. Freshmen are then asked to join a group during one of their half or whole study periods for a short length of time.

A few freshmen are unable to be in these classes for various reasons, but they also include a number of upperclassmen. Students may join them to improve their speed, comprehension, or interpretation, or may be placed in them by their counselor or teacher.
Students continue in this course until they can read 250 words per minute with 70 per cent comprehension.

Attempted during these weeks are improvement of memory, concentration, and speed. Students are assisted in concentration of important points in various subjects such as English, history, and science. Psychology is also covered in this class concerning reading skills.

An assortment of materials is used by the students including SRA materials, mimeographed sheets, and accelerators (to improve speed). Miss Marjorie Johnston noted that in the past nine years the students are now "thinking better and the vocabulary has improved, although the speed has had little change."
