Matmen Triumph Over Niles West

The wrestling season for the Maine West varsity wrestling team ended on a sour note last Friday and Saturday when the Warriors failed to place in the District's wrestling meet held at Elk Grove.

Almost all the Warriors were pitted against a top wrestler during the meet. It was especially a disappointment to the squad because this is the first time in the history of Maine West that at least one varsity wrestler did not place in this annual event.

A large and energetic upperclassman squad may offer the Warriors more success in the future. One of West's wrestlers, Curtin, was disqualified from the meet after he continued wrestling after the whistle ending the action was blown.

On February 2 the Maine West varsity matmen were edged out by Niles North. Niles defeated West by a score of 25-16. But West came back the next week, on February 9, when the Warrior grapplers defeated Niles West.
Maine West went through a trying season this year. With the loss of key wrestlers through injury or other reasons during many meets, the grapplers were put at an automatic disadvantage.

But the discipline and effort required of the wrestlers is more than enough reason to make the team real "winners." Hours of weekly practice and starvation "to make weight" are just examples of the sacrifices made by these teammates.

Although a team fails to take first place in the Conference or fails to strike up a glorious winning record, it may succeed in its effort to unify boys with a common interest and to teach them some basic facts about the motivation and effort that is needed in life.

Determination and confidence are encouraged in wrestling. The wrestlers must be congratulated on finishing the season. They did a fine job of representing Maine West.
