Tankmen Nip Niles West

Last Friday night and Saturday afternoon Maine West participated in the Conference finals at New Trier West. The Warriors moved up from last year's sixth place finish to take the fifth spot this year.

Individually, Dan Brinkman '68 led the way for Maine. In the 50-yard freestyle he qualified third but finished second tying a school record with a time of 23.2. While qualifying for the 100-yard free style, Dan broke the old school record of 52.5 with a 51.5. He went on to finish second with a 51.7 in the finals.

The relay team of Jim Lillquist '69, Ted Loska '69, Jim Greenwald '68, and John Harrisville '68 qualified third and finished fifth. The other team, made up by Harrisville, Greenwald, Parent, and Stoner, qualified seventh and finished sixth.
Even though Maine moved up to fifth place this year, Coach Peter Andersen feels that with a little improvement the tankmen could finish in fourth place next season. Tonight the District finals begin, and competition will be even tougher.

The Maine West swimming team came up with their first Conference victory February 9, when they beat Niles West by the score of 48 to 47. The tankers managed to take both relays and still have five individual winners. Clutch performances from Greenwald and Stoner helped the Warriors to squeak by Niles.

Warrior Brinkman won both the 50 and the 100-yard free styles. In the 200-yard free style Stoner and Peterson finished second and third. With a 2:25.4 time Lillquist took first place in the 200-yard individual medley. First place spots also went to Loska and Parent, but the most important time went to the relay team of Harrisville, Greenwald, Parent, and Stoner who gave Maine their victory.
