Todd Charles Awaldt, 48, his wife, Mrs. Ann Hope Awaldt, 68, and their beloved dog, Lucy, passed suddenly on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in their home in Fayetteville, NC. Todd and Ann were happily married for 27 years. Mr. Awaldt was born Sept. 28, 1965, in North Tonawanda, N.Y., and was the first son of Jaretta and Al Awaldt. Todd was employed by the Cumberland County public schools child nutrition for the past 10 years. He also proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Awaldt. Mr. Awaldt is survived by his mother, Jaretta Awaldt of Charleston, W.Va.; brothers, Lance Awaldt and wife, Janet, of San Antonio, and Chris Awaldt and wife, Tina, of Charleston; sister, Allyson Edens of Hernshaw, W.Va. Mrs. Ann Awaldt was born Oct. 29, 1944, in Halifax County, to Ben Hale and Virginia Lucille Twisdale. She was retired from the Army and Air Force Exchange Service after 25 years as the food service supervisor. Her assignments were at Homestead Air Force Base, Fla., Moody Air Force Base, Ga., and Fort Bragg. Mrs. Awaldt is survived by her brothers, Bobbie Twisdale of Roanoke Rapids, and Willis Twisdale of Elkton, Va.; sisters, Sally Jones, Jane Hudgins and Hazel Cyr, all of St. Petersburg, Fla., Betty Dickens of Cheraw, S.C., and Mickie Twisdale of Miami. Mr. and Mrs. Awaldt are survived by son, Douglas Taylor of Virginia Beach, Va.; and daughters, Patricia Simmons and husband, Lee, of Wilmington, and Haydee Akers of Waynesville, Ga.; three grandchildren, Brian Simmons, Dylan Taylor, and Stephanie Simmons. They were remarkable and loving people who always thought of others first. The love for each other, their families, friends, home and beloved dog, Lucy, were expressed in their actions at every turn. Words cannot express how deeply they were loved and will be missed . . . A former Fort Bragg soldier and father of two who police say fatally shot two of his neighbors and their dog Saturday night before turning the gun on himself suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder, his wife said Sunday. The Fayetteville Police Department responded to 7905 Gaza Court in the Farmington subdivision in Fayetteville around 8:15 p.m. Saturday after Thomas called 911 asking for help because her husband, Allen Thomas, was in their front yard firing a handgun. While responding to the call, police were notified about a nearby shooting at 6713 Potters Court, where they found Ann Awaldt, 68, dead and her husband, Todd Awaldt, 48, seriously injured. He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died. About a half-mile away at Christina Street and Hoke Loop Road, investigators later found Allen Thomas, 29, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Danica Thomas said her husband of nearly three years and father of her 5-month-old and 3-year-old girls recently retired from the U.S. Army after serving several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, where, in March 2010, he was injured in a suicide bombing that caused both his lungs to collapse and left him nearly 90 percent disabled. He had been diagnosed as having severe PTSD, Danica Thomas said, but everything appeared fine with her husband on Saturday until she heard him firing the gun. Ann Awaldt had a civilian job at Fort Bragg and Todd Awaldt worked the last 11 years as a maintenance employee for Cumberland County Schools.
